Liz von Hasseln and her husband Kyle decided to bake a birthday cake for a friend in 2011. They didn't own an oven, but being graduates of the Southern California Institute of Architecture, they did own a 3D printer. After a few weeks experimenting with different sugars and an inkjet printer, they printed a tiny cupcake topper with their friend's name in cursive sugar. "When we graduated, we launched The Sugar Lab," says Liz. The startup has recently been acquired by Los Angeles additive firm 3D Systems.
